Have this ready when you call
- Upright or grand, and the make if it is written on the fallboard
- Roughly when it was last tuned, even if the answer is "no idea"
- Anything that sounds or feels wrong beyond the tuning itself
- Which floor it is on, and whether there is parking
The last one matters more than people expect. If I have to carry a case of tools four floors up, the visit takes longer and I would rather know beforehand.
Before the visit
Clear about a metre of space in front of the instrument and take the photographs and vases off the lid. If the room has been very dry or very damp, mention it — it explains a lot of what I will find inside.
I work in silence. It is not rudeness; tuning by ear needs a quiet room, and a television in the next room genuinely makes the job worse.
